INTRODUCTION
The Trial Embankments Malaysia programme was initiated in 1987 by Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia and it comprised fully instrumented full scale prototype embankment trials involving 14 different ground engineering techniques. The results of this trial programme were presented at the International Symposium on Trial Embankments on Malaysian Marine Clays in Kuala Lumpur on 6 to 8 November 1989.
The Geotechnical Engineering Technical Division of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM GETD) is hosting the Symposium on Practical Applications of Ground Engineering for Embankments on Soft Soils and Exhibitions, in conjunction with the 31st Anniversary of the Trial Embankments Malaysia (TEM) at Muar, in Kuala Lumpur.
The Symposium will help delegates understand the technologies and techniques for soft soil engineering necessary for satisfactory construction of embankments (or earthworks), especially to support high speed transportation facilities, over soft foundation soils comprising:
(a) Science and soil mechanics for soft soil engineering
(b) Issues concerning engineering, construction and performance
(c) Design and applications of ground engineering techniques and innovations for embankments on soft soils
(d) Best practice in construction techniques and sustainable ground engineering of soft soils
(e) Case studies on performance and behaviour of constructed works
(f) Maintenance and rehabilitation of facilities constructed over soft soils
(g) Challenges of long term maintenance of instrumentation and settlement prediction techniques
(h) Other related geotechnical soft ground engineering
The Symposium aims at promoting the sharing of scientific knowledge, experience, skills, ideas and achievements in the designing, financing and contracting as well as construction, operation and maintenance and the rehabilitation of embankments for high speed transportation facilities amongst the ASEAN and other countries on an organised basis and with structured aims.
The Symposium shall also present the latest update on monitoring measurement data and behaviour of various surviving schemes that are maintained at the 33 years old world famous TEM program. Interested authors are invited to submit Abstracts and Papers.
SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACT & PAPERS
The Symposium theme is PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF GROUND ENGINEERING FOR EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT SOILS.
The Organising Committee on GEEMSS2021 cordially invites you to submit abstract(s) of not more than 200 words for the Symposium by email to: [email protected].
The Symposium covers a broad range of themes related to geotechnical engineering, including but not, limited to:
(a) Geotechnical engineering
(b) Ground engineering
(c) Embankments on soft soils
(d) Others are also welcomed.
The Symposium language written and spoken shall be in English.

TENTATIVE CONTENTS
DAY 1:
Young engineers should be interested to know about the behaviour of embankment on soft clay; particularly the marine clay of coastal areas like Muar as well as to gain exposure on effective ground engineering techniques available to ensure satisfactory post-construction performance.
DAY 2:
Long term behaviour of High Speed Transportation infrastructures on soft clay.
DAY 3:
Limited to the first 120 paid participants on first-come first-serve basis.

TENTATIVE CONTENTS
DAY 1:
- Soft soil engineering for high speed transportation embankments including highways, high speed rails and airport runways and its infrastructure.
- Infrastructures constructed on soft ground often encounter settlement problems that impaired their serviceability. A case in point is the KLIA2 runway, taxiway and parking apron settlement nightmares.
- The lessons learnt from the TEM in Muar must have been forgotten although the international scale conference was held in 1989 in Subang Jaya with great enthusiasm.
- The case of TEM in Muar has been quoted frequently by experts in their works for embankment on soft clay.
Young engineers should be interested to know about the behaviour of embankment on soft clay; particularly the marine clay of coastal areas like Muar as well as to gain exposure on effective ground engineering techniques available to ensure satisfactory post-construction performance.
DAY 2:
- Settlement predictions for scheme 3/2 and 6/6 on June 2020. (Delegates interested to make predictions shall be provided with settlement monitoring data between September 1989 and August 1991 for the 2 schemes).
- Trial Embankment Malaysia (TEM) in Muar; a 33rd Anniversary update.
- Case histories of embankments from the TEM in Muar.
Long term behaviour of High Speed Transportation infrastructures on soft clay.
DAY 3:
- Technical Visit to TEM Site.
Limited to the first 120 paid participants on first-come first-serve basis.
